Film Industry- Regulating Films
Regulation:
a rule or directive made and maintained by an authority.
In media terms this commonly refers to age ratings of a media product giving the audience advice on which ages can consume this product. This is particularly helpful for a concerned parent who isn't sure whether their child should watch a certain film for example.
BBFC:
The British Board of Film Classification is a non-governmental organisation founded by the film industry in 1912. They are responsible for the classification and censorship of films exhibited in cinemas and video works like trailers for the United Kingdom.
U: Suitable for all ages.
PC: Parental Guidance (General audience but some scene might be unsuitable for young children).
12: Suitable for 12 years and over (People under the age of 12 must see a 12a film at a cinema accompanied by an adult).
15: Suitable for 15 years and over.
18: Suitable for Adults.
R-18: To be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied in licensed sex shops and only suitable for Adults.
E: Suitable for ages 6 and over.
"regulation of film in the UK has largely become pointless due to the rise of digital technologies like the internet"
I agree intensely with this statement because sources like the internet are easy to access and immensely broad that not every form of adult media can be blocked by parental control services. For example there are many scene from films rated 15 and 18 on video websites like YouTube.
Gummo film scene:
Prediction of Age rating: 12
There is no intensely strong language however there is the use of offensive language (Queer) which can be seen as insulting. The boy that said the word queer uses it in a discriminant manner.
Actual Age rating: 18
Escape from Guantanamo bay:
Predication of Age rating: 12The language used is quite strong however the word "bitch" is moderate language and the situation is presented in quite a light manner. But on the other hand it can be seen potentially as quite sexist. It is also swearing aggressively. There is use of bad language, but their is also the encouragement of non discriminant actions.
Actual Age rating: 15
The Land Before Time:
Predication of Age rating: UDeath is shown in the film but there is no blood or any intense scenes of the character dying. The scene is not immensely dark either. It is also a cartoon which doesn't have as much of a relation to something that is performed physically with real life actors.
Actual Age rating: U
